Czech Summer Schools in the Czech Republic

Summer School of the University of Ostrava

The Department of Czech Language of the Faculty of Arts of the University of Ostrava hosts a 21-day summer school from July 2nd to July 23rd. The courses will be taught in small groups and take place at two levels: beginner and pre-intermediate. Mornings will focus on language, while afternoons will mainly focus on Czech culture and history. In the evenings, multicultural parties will be organized. The program also offers cultural trips and excursions. The fee, of CZK 22,000 or 27,000 (depending on whether the participant wants accommodation), includes tuition, material, excursions and accommodation for the whole month of July, for those who wish to stay longer and discover more of the Czech Republic: one of Europe’s largest festivals, Colors of Ostrava, takes place at the end of July. Applications must be sent in before April 30th, 2018.

 

Summer School of the University of Western Bohemia in Plzen

The International Language Summer School of the University of Western Bohemia in Plzen offers a three-week all-day Czech course from July 9th to July 27th, for a fee ranging for CZK 24,500 to 27,500 (covering tuition, accommodation, course material and some excursions). The School offers courses for beginners up to upper-intermediate students. The afternoon and evenings are dedicated to cultural and fun activities such as tours of the city and the screening of Czech films. All applications must be sent in by May 20th.

 

Summer School (Central Europe) of the Palacky University in Olomouc

After the success of its first edition, the Palacky University of Olomouc hosts its second Summer School Central Europe: History & Culture – Architecture & Society 2018, from July 21st to August 19th, 2018. The program focuses on broadening the students’ knowledge of the Czech language, culture and history; and includes trips to three Central European capitals: Prague, Bratislava and Vienna. Other excursions to historic sites are organized. Seminars on the following topics are offered: Baroque culture and spirituality, Gender roles in modern history, including the Communist regime, Dissident groups and opposition in Central Europe, and many more. The fee of 750€ covers for tuition, course material, trips and accommodation. Applications must be sent in by May 31st.

 

Summer School of the Institute for Languages and Preparatory Studie sof the Charles University in Poděbrady

From July 2nd to July 27th, 2018, the Institute for Languages and Preparatory Studies of the Charles University hosts Czech Summer Schools in the city of Poděbrady, 40km outside of Prague, with classes designed for all levels, from beginners to advanced levels. Optional activities during the afternoon consist of the extra lectures, the showing of Czech films, as well as a cultural and sports program. Outing to various touristic locations in the Czech Republic are also available. The fee of 760€ includes tuition and course material, an additional fee of 152€ or 225€ covers for accommodation in the University’s residence hall. The deadline for application is June 18th, 2018.

 

Summer School of the Charles University in Prague

For those who would rather discover the beauty of the Czech capital, the Charles University also organizes a Summer School in Prague, from July 27th to August 24th. Courses are open to all level, from beginners to advanced students. Afternoons are free, but cultural activities are organized by the teachers – tours of Prague, visits of its most emblematic monuments. Excursions to different sites are also proposed during the weekends. The full price of the stay, which includes four weeks of language courses (for which students can be granted 8 ECTS), weekend trips, culture program, accommodation and half board, is CZK 37,500, although scholarship holders are also welcome. Applications must be sent in by June 30th.

 

Summer School (Slavonic Studies) of the Palacky University in Olomouc

The Palacky University also organizes a Summer School of Slavonic Studies, with a higher focus on language, as well as language courses in other Slavonic languages, such as Polish and Russian. Two types of courses are available: a two-week one, from July 21st to August 5th, and a four-week one, from July 21st to August 19th. The program includes three trips in Moravia, showing of films and other cultural workshops. During the afternoons, the student can attend seminars of various topics. Fees can be paid either in € or CZK, and can be found on the website under the label “Fees and prices”. Applications must be sent in by June 30th.

 

Summer School of the Masaryk University in Brno

The Department of Czech for Foreigners of the Masaryk University in Brno organizes each year a month-long Summer School of Slavonic Studies. This year, the school will be held from July 21st to August 18th, and offers several courses depending on the applicant’s level: complete beginner, pre-intermediate and intermediate to advances students. In the afternoon, the school gives its participants the possibility to attend extra seminars. The program also includes tours of popular locations in the Czech Republic. The fee, which covers tuition, accommodation, excursions, breakfasts and lunches, is CZK 34,000; though the Summer School is also open to holders of scholarships. Applications must be sent in by July 5th, 2018 at the latest.

 

Summer School of the University of South Bohemia in České Budějovice

The Summer School of Slavonic Studies is hosted by the Department of Czech Studies of the Faculty of Arts of the University of South Bohemia in České Budějovice from August 20th to September 7th, 2018. The course is designed for those who pursue Slavonic or Czech Studies and those who take interest in the Czech language. Participants are divided in three groups depending on their level. The program also includes trips to museums, galleries and other places of interest in South Bohemia, and there is a variety of sports events as well. The price of the course (tuition fee, accommodation and full board, weekend trips) is 1.100€, including registration fee. Applications must be sent in by July 31st.

 

Summer School of the University of Economics in Prague

The University of Economics in Prague (VSE) has designed a Summer School mainly aimed at those who wish to study in the Czech Republic. The course, declined in two formulas (either 25 hours of Czech weekly, or 25 hours of Czech and 15 hours of English) takes place from July 2nd to July 22nd, and is taught by English or Russian speaking teachers. The fee, of either 400€ or 650€ (plus an additional 150€ registration fee), does not cover for accommodation; however students can apply for accommodation at a dormitory for a fee of 310€. The program also includes some cultural activities. Applications can be sent directly on the VSE’s website.

 

Bohemistic Seminar of the Moravian Library and Tomaš Bata University in Zlín

From July 15th to 21st, 2018, the Moravian Regional Library, in association with the Faculty of Multimedia Communications of the Tomas Bata University in Zlín is hosting a seminar design for those who study Bohemistics. Lectures will be given by experts in the field of culture and literature on three major topics: Czech modern architecture, art and culture of the First Republic, and artistic translation. In Luhačovice, participants will learn more about Leoš Janáček and Dušan Jurkovič. Lectures on Moravian and Slovak folk cultures will be given at Rožnov pod Radhoštěm and Vizovice. The program is based on film screenings and readings. The Premia Bohemica Award will be awarded during the seminar. The fee of 2,000 CZK will cover for accommodation in Zlin, transport, excursions and meals. Apply by May 31st, 2018 by sending an email to sinclova@mzk.cz.
