Let’s top off the year with a beautiful “velvet” fashion event, and one of our favorite music evenings of the year – the annual Czech Christmas concert with a cup of mulled wine. Thank you for spending 2019 with us. We look forward to the next one!

Czech Fashion Festival: RE-VELVET


Celebrating the 30th anniversary of the Velvet Revolution in style!
A pop-up right next to Flagey brings a selection of great sustainable fashion, as well as a rich program of workshops on various techniques of upcycling running until late evening hours. Stop by for a quick look, or grab a drink and scissors and spend whole day with us!
Including a textile installation and a special “velvet” collection by Lenka Vacková and Barbora Procházková who pay tribute to the generation of our parents who before 1989 naturally upcycled their garments not out of abundance, but out of necessity.

Saturday 30 Nov
2pm - Project Sapience / Barbora Procházková: Don't buy this backpack. Make it!
5pm - Shapes & Drawings. Creating collages from In August Company leftover materials.
7pm - Think More Trousers. Presentation of Think More Basic project and debate on worth of one's garments by Overall Office.
9pm - Working Hands. Performative workshop with found objects by Jan Bražina and Kristýna Gajdošová.
All day: Textile Mountain/ Lenka Vacková repair shop

Sunday 1 Dec

3pm - #FolkFuture Silver Pendant Workshop by Queen's Wood Studio
(Contribution towards material 8EUR)
All day: Textile Mountain / Lenka Vacková repair shop. Bring your favourite pieces that need to be repaired, we will help you to do it and make it even better.

 Notre Dame au Sablon, Brussels
The Christmas Concert
The Christmas time may begin at the annual Christmas concert! This year the vaults of the Gothic church of Notre-Dame au Sablon will resound with the famous Clarinet Quintet in A Major by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, followed by Josef Suk’s meditation and Ondřej Kukal’s Clarinettino. The concert will blend composers’ perfect balance of tones with the distinctive interpretation of the leading Czech clarinetist Ludmila Peterková, accompanied by the Bennewitz Quartet of world renown.

Adam Vačkář: Afterlife
In the long run the artist Adam Vačkář creates simulacra of the ecological and social reality of the consumer system. In his latest projects he deals with the post-apocalypse, the beauty of toxicity and the vanity of destruction. You can visit his current exhibition in Brussels also during December!

Leuven International Short Film Festival

The Czech directors Tereza Kovandová, Jiří Havlíček, Ondřej Novák and Martin Smatana will screen their movies in the framework of the International Short Film Festival Leuven. Every year, the festival, founded in 1995, introduces a selection of short films – fiction and animation, documentaries as well as non-narrative shorts.

Lukáš Vondráček and Belgian National Orchestra

Over the last decade the pianist Lukáš Vondráček has travelled around the world working with prestigious orchestras such as the Philadelphia or Sydney Symphony orchestras and others. This time, he will be playing with Belgian National Orchestra interpreting a symphony composed by Anton Bruckner or a concert by Johannes Brahms.

Rusalka by Opera Ballet Vlaanderen

The opera Rusalka by Antonín Dvořák is one of the most breathtaking classical works of the fin de siècle. The Czech composer was inspired by the famous Danish fairy tale of The Little Mermaid creating a universal allegory in which the desire for an authentic existence plays a central role. During December and January the ensemble of the renowned Opera Ballet Vlaanderen presents the masterpiece in Antwerp and Ghent.

Recyclart – a nonprofit organization managing a multi-disciplinary arts center and projects in social economy – introduces another of their conferences on photography. This time, the Czech artist Tereza Zelenková will give a speech about the art of photo. Do not miss the possibility of questioning, exchanging or even being in touch with the speakers.

Manneken Pis puts on Zátopek’s tracksuit

The Manneken Pis Corrida charity cross-country race will be held this year for the tenth time! And you know what? The bronze statuette of Manneken Pis will put on Emil Zátopek’s tracksuit. The dressing ceremony will take place on 26 December in the morning and runners will start at 8:15pm from the Spanish Square in Brussels. Let’s join the fun!

If you are still thinking about a nice Christmas present, you may pick some of the Czech books which have recently been translated in French or Dutch. The authors such as Karel Čapek, Ferdinand Peroutka, Jiří Kratochvil and others are available at Librebook, where you can also have a cup of coffee and page through a selection of contemporary prose, poetry and children books from all over the Europe.
