One World festival in Brussels

One World, International Documentary Film Festival on Human Rights, will take place in Brussels from April 18th till April 27th, where the 14 movies chosen from Prague One World festival will be screened for the Brussels’ audience. The Czech Centre in Brussels, the Permanent Representation of the Czech Republic to the EU and the People in Need Foundation in collaboration with the Italian Cultural Institute, the BOZAR Centre for Fine Arts and the Norwegian Embassy in Belgium invite you to this unique film festival connected with human rights.

For the tenth time, One World Brussels will address the representatives of European institutions, movie fans and regular audience in order to initiate a discussion on important social issues topics with human rights activists and NGOs. The opening ceremony will take place in the Bozar Centre for Fine Arts on April 18th at 8pm with the first movie “No Man is an Island”. The movie of the Belgian director Tim De Keersmaecker documents the story of Adam and Omar, two young boys thrust by fate on the shores of the Italian island of Lampedusa. A lifebelt was thrown to them by two Italian families, who have been caring for them for several years. Omar from Tunisia works at a centre for refugees and Adam from Ghana cleans a family hotel. Every day each tries to put distance between them and the lives they left behind, to which they never intend to return. But finding a place in a new environment, which for many migrants is only a stop on the way to the continent, is harder than they imagined. They know that their journey will not end on this island. They must find the courage in themselves to start all over again elsewhere. The film, rich in visual metaphors is a moving and personal parable about people building a new home.

Festival screenings will be held in the European Parliament, the Permanent Representation of the Czech Republic to the EU, the Norwegian Embassy in Belgium, the Bozar Centre for Fine Arts and the Italian Cultural Institute. Screenings will be followed by panel discussions with the participation of politicians, human rights activists and international NGOs.

The winning film of the festival One World in Brussels will be chosen by the five-member jury from 7 competition films. This year the jury consists of: Andrew Rettmann from EU Observer, Catherine Absalom from the Worldwide Human Rights Movement (FIDH), Emma Achilli from the Front Line Defenders, Markéta Balková, Human Rights officer from the European External Action Service (EEAS) and Karolína Babická from International commission of jurists.

A Real Change in Cuba?

We would like to invite you also to the roundtable on the topic: A Real Change in Cuba?, which will take place at the European Parliament on 26th April at 1pm. The keynote speaker will be Julio Aleaga, an independant journalist from Cuba.

Has there been any tangible development in the area of human rights? What the 28 EU states should not forget?

The seventh round of negotiations between the EU and Cuba took place on March 11, 2016 in Havana between HRVP Federica Mogherini and Cuban Foreign Minister Bruno Rodriguez. Since the EU and the Cuban government have sit down for the first time to negotiate the Political Dialogue and Cooperation Agreement, there have been various reunions to set the basis of the future agreement. However, the Cuban government has not yet made any concessions or laid out any foundations for real change, and human rights remain an issue that the EU does not put on the table during the negotiations.

PIN, in collaboration with MEP Tomáš Zdechovský, has invited two representatives of the Cuban independent civil society who will share their views on the EU - Cuba negotiations  and its impact on human rights. After the debate People in Need will present the exhibition titled How Can the World Help Cuban Civil Society whose aim is to invite others to support the independent civil society in Cuba. This event is being held in cooperation with MEP Tomáš Zdechovský. Number of seats is limited, please register at least 3 days in advance at: tomas.zdechovsky@europarl.europa.eu.
