Opera “Foxie! - The Cunning Little Vixen” in Brussels

One of the most famous works of Leoš Janáček “The Cunning Little Vixen” adapted by Christophe Coppen will be presented from 17th March to 2nd April 2017 at Palais de la Monnaie in Brussels. The audience will have a chance to enjoy an experience to remember, opera in three acts conducted by the young Italian-French conductor Antonello Manacorda.

“Vixens aren’t made to be pets“

‘Is this a fairytale or is it all true?’. At the end of The Cunning Little Vixen, the forester muses on the wonder of the eternal renewal of nature. The 68-year-old Leoš Janáček drew his inspiration for this dazzling opera from a ‘strip cartoon’ on the joys and sorrows of the vixen Bystroushka that appeared in a newspaper in Brno in 1920. This ‘Czech Midsummer Night’s Dream’, in which, like Shakespeare, he poetically entwines fantasy and reality, is his most cheerful and youthful opera. The Belgian artist and director Christophe Coppens inserts an added element of darkness and captures this in an original all-embracing concept in which youngsters and their experiments come into conflict with the adult world in a community that establishes its own nature-oriented rites. The young Italian-French conductor Antonello Manacorda, one of the discoveries of the last La Monnaie season, is sure to give us a fresh and dynamic reading of this extremely lyrical score.
