Literary evening with Marek Šindelka in Brussels

Czech Centre Brussels and the European bookshop Librebook cordially invites you to a literary evening with Marek Šindelka, one of the leading Czech novelist and poet awarded the Jiří Orten Prize (2006) and Magnesia Litera for prose (2012). The evening will take place on 15th February 2017 at the European bookshop Librebook.

Marek Šindelka (1984) is a Czech poet and prose writer who made literary debut with a poetry collection Strychnin a jiné básně (Strychnine and Other Poems, Paseka, Praha 2005 – awarded by Jiří Orten Prize in 2006), followed by his first novel Chyba (The Mistake, Pistorius & Olšanská, Praha 2008), which later came out as a graphic novel as well. A short story collection Zůstaňte s námi (Stay with Us, Odeon, Praha 2011) won Šindelka the prestigious Magnesia Litera Award in 2012. Marek Šindelka lives in Prague and works as a literary reviewer in the Czech newspaper Hospodářské noviny.

In 2014, he wrote a novel Mapa Anny that was translated in Dutch by Edgar De Bruin and published by Das Mag (Anna in kaart gebracht, 2016). This collection of short stories containing ten texts, which are mutually related, has raised an unprecedented interest of Dutch public and Marek Šindelka participated in many literary evenings and meetings. Literary reviews have accepted this work with enthusiasm; see, for example, Peter Swanborn’s review for Volkskrant.

Marek Šindelka visited Belgium in September 2016 when he met Belgian public in Antwerp. His recent work was Únava materiálu (literally “The fatigue of material”, Odeon, 2016) which is the first Czech (probably also the first European) novel about the refugee crisis. Story describes a journey of two brothers from an unnamed war zone to Europe.

In February 2017 Marek Šindelka will participate in “KORT”, festival of short stories which is organised in Ghent and is also invited by the Czech Centre Brussels for a literary evening held at the European bookshop Librebook. This unique bookshop offers the readers literary evenings and meetings on different topics with various writers and authors held in diverse languages.
