Marek Šindelka's book Material fatigue (Materiaalmoeheid): presentation in Ghent

Czech writer Marek Šindelka will present a Dutch translation of his novel Material Fatigue. The book was published in 2016 and now it will be presented to the Dutch and Flemish public under the title Materiaalmoeheid (translation Edgar de Bruin, published by Das Mag).

It is the first Czech novel (probably also the first European novel) on the refugee crisis. Very positive review was recently published in a Belgian magazine the Knack Focus.

Marek is not unknown to the Belgian audience. In 2012, his novel Polaroid was translated into Dutch by Edgar De Bruin (published by Voetnoot publishers) and in 2016 his highly acclaimed novel Mapa Anny was translated by the same translator and published by Das Mag (Anna in kaart gebracht, 2016). This collection of short stories containing ten texts, which are mutually related, has raised an unprecedented interest of Dutch public and Marek Šindelka has since participated in numerous literary events (PassaPorta festival 2017).

Marek Šindelka (1984) is a Czech poet and prose writer who made literary debut with a poetry collection Strychnin a jiné básně (Strychnine and Other Poems, Paseka, Praha 2005 – awarded by Jiří Orten Prize in 2006), followed by his first novel Chyba (The Mistake, Pistorius & Olšanská, Praha 2008), which later came out as a graphic novel as well. A short story collection Zůstaňte s námi (Stay with Us, Odeon, Praha 2011) won Šindelka the prestigious Magnesia Litera Award in 2012. Marek Šindelka lives in Prague and works as a literary reviewer in the Czech newspaper Hospodářské noviny.

The recently released comic book, Saint Barbara, which is a thriller about the searching for truth, has prompted a great deal of appreciation for the readers. The work is inspired by the Kuřim’s case of the abuse of two boys and is often referred by the critics to the top of Czech literature.
