Czech pianist Lukáš Vondráček won the prestigious Queen Elisabeth Competition

From 2 until 28 May the young generation of pianists competed in Brussels in front of a prestigious international jury of Queen Elisabeth Competition. This competition was open to classically trained pianists of all nationalities, aged 18 up to 29 years. Czech pianist Lukas Vondracek won the final and will perform at the Centre for Fine Arts Bozar on 9th June 2016 at 8pm!

The Queen Elisabeth Competition was established in 1937. At the time it was known as the Eugène Ysaÿe Competition. H.M. Queen Elisabeth and the celebrated Belgian violinist and composer were behind this magnificent project. The Competition soon became one of the leading international competitions for the violin and the piano; later, it was extended to include composition and (since 1988) the voice; it will soon also include the cello (starting in 2017). The Queen Elisabeth Competition owes its reputation in part to the very strict rules under which it is organised, but it also owes much to its prestigious jury, made up of outstanding artists and internationally renowned educators. The competition is held under the patronage of Her Majesty Queen Mathilde.

Born in Opava, Czech Republic, in 1986, Lukas Vondracek's musical ability was spotted at the age of two by his parents, both professional pianists.

He gave his first concert at the age of 4 and by now, , he has visited 27 different countries giving in excess of 1000 concerts. His first international tour was at the age of 10 (1997), when he performed at various festivals in the UK and the USA. In the intervening years he gave many recital and concerto performances throughout his home country as well as abroad.

In 2001, Lukas was awarded the Hanno R. Ellenbogen Award for the most exceptional young artist in Europe.  During the 13th Van Cliburn International Piano Competition (2009), Lukas was awarded The Raymond E. Buck Jury Discretionary Award. In 2010, he won First Prize at the 10th Hilton Head International Piano Competition in South Carolina, USA. Most recently, Lukas won First Prize, Grand Prize plus 4 special prizes at the 2012 UNISA Vodacom International Piano Competition in Pretoria, South Africa.
