„Foire du livre“ is the most important French-language book fair in Belgium, with a tradition spanning for over 40 years. The Czech Republic will participate for the very first time in 2018. Czechs will share the stand with Hungary, Poland and Slovakia, the other members of the Visegrad Group.  The authors coming to Brussels to represent our republic are Jaroslav Rudiš and Michal Ajvaz.

THE NUMBER OF THE VISEGRAD STAND IS 116

Tour & Taxis in Brussels will be transformed into a vast library at the occasion of the annual encounter for all book-lovers. The fair will welcome writers and personalities from the field of literature from all around the world, as well as large and small publishing houses. There will be a series of meetings and book signings with authors within the official program, including those with Jaroslav Rudiš and Michal Ajvaz, the writers representing the Czech Republic.

Michal Ajvaz is a pioneer of modern magic realism literature. His books, full of fantasy symbols and parallel worlds behind the mirrors, are often compared to the writing of his colleagues from Latin America. In 2012, Ajvaz received the Magnesia Litera prize for his roman Luxembourg Gardens, inspired by his walks along the Seine. Ajvaz was also awarded the Jaroslav Seifert prize for his Empty Streets. The books that will be presented at the fair are The Golden Age and The Other City, both translated to French.

Michal Ajvaz will participate in the debate“The literature is born in the east” together with Hungarian author Krisztina Tóth and Slovak Ursula Kovalik on Friday 23rd February at 6:00pm. Afterwards, the audience will have the opportunity to meet Ajvaz personally at the Czech stand.

Jaroslav Rudiš is a Czech young writer whose first book The Sky Under Berlin has been met with a great success. It has been translated into 7 languages and awarded the Jiří Orten prize. One of the following pieces, Alois Nebel, is a graphic novel about a Czech-German train dispatcher, created together with the cartoonist Jaromír Švejdík. The story has been made into a movie and awarded the European Film Award for the best animated film in 2012.

The conference with Jaroslav Rudiš and the Hungarian writer Benedek Totth will be held on Saturday 24th of February at 12:00am. Signing session of Rudiš’s book will follow at 2:00 pm at the Czech stand.
