Lenka Horňáková-Civade reads from her book Giboulées de Soleil

Czech Centre Brussels and Centre d’Etudes tchèques at Université Libre de Bruxelles invite you to a literary evening with Lenka Horňáková-Civade, Czech writer, journalist and painter, living in France since 1998. The evening, during which the author presents her latest book "Giboulées de soleil" (Alma, 2016) will be held on 1st March 2017 from 7.30PM at the Maison des Arts at the Université Libre de Bruxelles and the debate will be in Czech and French.

Milan Kundera is not the only Czech novelist who has chosen to write in French. The writer and painter Lenka Horňáková-Civade has been in France for the last twenty years, living for most of that time with her French husband amid the beautiful countryside of Provence. The landscape and people of the region have inspired her to write several books in Czech, but she decided to write her latest novel directly in French, a language that she only learned as an adult. Paradoxically, the book takes us not to Provence, but to Czechoslovakia, telling the story of the lives of four generations of women in one family.

Shortly after this novel was published in France, it was included in the selection of laureates of the major French literary prize - the Prix Renaudot. It was awarded the "prize for young readers" Prix Renaudot des lycéens and several other French literary honors. The book attracted positive response from both critics and readers and it will be published this spring by Argo in Czech translation "Marie a Magdalény".

About the book Giboulées de soleil

Magdaléna, Libuše, Eva ... one family lineage and the same fate: all growing up without a father. Magdaléna experienced the Nazi occupation. Libuše's childhood was framed by collectivization and ends during the occupation of Warsaw Pact troops. Eva is the child of normalization. And one after another tells in their own way the story of love, hope, light in the darkness and a source of internal strength that helps each one of them to carry their heads high despite of the adversity and history.

About the author

Lenka Horňáková-Civade graduated at the University of Economics in Prague and attended few semesters at the Faculty of Arts at Charles University. Before finishing her studies at the Charles University she decided to travel and eventually settled down in southern France. She studied art at the Sorbonne in Paris and her drawings, watercolors and oil paintings appeared in collections in Australia, USA and Europe. One of her drawings is also used as the cover of her book Giboulées de soleil. Her first books written in Czech language – "Provence jako sen" (2010), "Lanýže" (2011) a "Pohlednice z kavárny" (2015) - reflect the author's perception of the (south) French reality. The book Giboulées de soleil brings a fundamental change: Horňáková-Civade wrote this book in French and the theme is on the contrary based in Czech environment.
