JUNGLE festival of illustration: Czech Focus

The JUNGLE Festival will take place in Liège, but opens up a wide window on the international scenery of literature for youth and illustration. The friendly festival will present exhibitions, workshops, artistic and musical animations, meetings, concerts etc.

This year, the JUNGLE Festival, in cooperation with the Czech Centre Brussels and as part of the anniversary program of the Czech and Slovak century, honours the Czech illustration craft which belongs to the one of the richest in Europe. See the full program below.

Via a subjective selection of 100 books and posters, the exhibition is a kaleidoscope of images plunging the festival's audience into the richness of the Czech tradition of illustrated books from the 30s to the 90s. The exhibition will present the most amazing creators of the Czech images. The works of Miroslav Sasek, Zdenek Miler and Kveta Pacovska are well known to the French-speaking public. But also the less known or forgotten works of Jiri Trnka, Josef Lada, Josef Capek, Adolf Hoffmeister, Zdenek Seydl, Adolf Born, Jan Kubicek, Bohumil Stepan or Jan Schmid ...

JUNGLE showcases the work of Jiri Salamoun through a retrospective exhibition. Little shown outside of the Czech borders, it spans more than fifty years and is a model of freedom. Salamoun has never stopped, throughout his career, constantly reinventing his drawing practice and exploring the vast territories of illustration. The exhibition will present a collection of 80 selected works in close collaboration with La Sardine à Lire (FR) and Lubos Dritna (CZ), which manage the Salamoun fund. Mainly focused on Jiri Salamoun's illustrations for young people, the exhibition will also show his works as an engraver, poster designer, cover designer, illustrator of novels and albums for the youth.

If the Czech tradition of the picture book is of immense wealth, it is far from being fixed in the past. The remarkable work of these two young illustrators, discovered and published by the Baobab editions in Prague, testifies to the vitality of contemporary Czech creation.

The festival also gives young writers a chance to participate and also meet with more experienced colleagues or publishers. Czech scene will be represented also by illustrator Alžběta Zemanová, who works in the artistic (loose) group Napoli. She focuses on paper and graphic techniques. She creates paper jigsaws and cut-outs. It is fun to her to materialize new fictional figures, which are presented in the form of both cloth and paper toys along with their stories and characters. In addition to the artists mentioned above, group of the Czech artists will be completed by Magdalena Rutova, the author of comic stripes about the Expert and his admirers.

About the festival:

The JUNGLE Festival was born out of the will and enthusiasm of illustrator and teacher Vincent Mathy, expert Michel Defourny, with the help of non-profit organizations Les Ateliers du Texte and l'Image the Livre aux Trésors library. These spokesmen from the publishing world for the youth wanted to create event which would highlight emerging and international creations. The project is run by the non-profit organization Tapage, whose social goal is to organize events which promote books.

The JUNGLE Festival is intended to highlight contemporary art in the edition for youth, to be the place for meetings and exchange for the general public and professionals. It focuses on young readers, their parents and families, teachers, librarians, influencers, authors, illustrators and publishers, and all who are curious about the constant renewal of the arts.
