Echoes of International Documentary Film Festival Ji.hlava in Brussels

Echoes of Ji.hlava IDFF are coming back this winter to Brussels for its fifth edition. From 8th to 19th February at the cinema NOVA and the European Parliament, Brussels audience can discover selection of films from the 20th edition of Ji.hlava IDFF. The event is co-organized by the Czech Centre Brussels, the Embassy of the Czech Republic in Brussels, the cinema NOVA, Ji.hlava IDFF, the Representation of the Vysočina region and the city of Jihlava.

Traditionally, the official opening will be held at the cinema NOVA on 9th February and two films will be screened. The first one is a directorial debut of Rozálie Kohoutová and Tomáš Bojar. A chronicle of the FC Roma football club, whose members have to persuade the other - “gadjo” - teams in the third league to play against them, transforms into an excursion through the various types of everyday Czech xenophobia. The film FC Roma obtained the price “Best Czech Documentary Film 2016”. The screening in presence of Rozálie Kohoutová, and a sound director Adam Levý.

The second film will be “Sea Tomorrow” of Yekaterina Suvorova. This observational documentary examines the disappearance of the Aral Sea and attempts at its restoration. At the location where the majority of maps and atlases show a large, majestic body of water, Katerina Suvorova finds only a largish pond and an arid wasteland, filled with the rusting remnants of wrecks waiting for scrap metal collectors. Shots of the enigmatic landscape, consisting of endless expanses of sand and dust, are alternated with captivating details. The film was awarded Special Mention of the First Lights jury (category for the film debuts).
