Czech comics and books for children at the Comic Strip Festival

For eight years running, the Brussels Comic Strip Festival has been the event of the year for every comic strip fan. This year again, the Czech Centre in Brussels will also participate in the festival. On 1st, 2nd and 3rd September 2017 you will be able to meet several Czech contemporary comics’ artists and discover their work. The guest of honour of the Czech stand, LUCIE LOMOVÁ, will sign her books in both Czech and in French and give a workshop. On Friday, young artist Štěpánka Jislová will give a conference on Gender in comics.

The Czech Centre Brussels went to the best Czech publishing houses for the editors’ pick and will bring this colourful selection to the stand in the International Pavilion. Not only had we found pure comics but also beautiful educational books, illustrations for small and eerie images for big fans and collectors.

NEW THIS YEAR!! We will also bring the French and English translations of Czech authors that are to be found in Belgium. The books by Lucie Lomová in these languages will be available to sign during her stay at our pavilion!

Lucie LOMOVÁ

Lucie Lomová was born in 1964 in Prague. Lucie studied dramaturgy at the Academy of Performing Arts in Prague. While still at university, she began to publish cartoons and created two characters of small mice called Anča and Pepík. Soon after her studies, she accepted an offer to continue with the series of Anča and Pepík, this time carrying out both the drawing and the story lines. She consequently published these stories in the most well-known and essentially only Czech children's comics magazine Čtyřlístek (literally “The Four-leaf Clover”). The stories met with considerable popularity amongst both children and their parents and were later published in collected form in three books and were also made into animated series.

More recently, she has illustrated The Greatest Czech Fairy Tales (translated to 8 languages) and her books are being published in France (publishing house Actes Sud). (Blog)

Štěpánka JISLOVÁ

Štěpánka Jislová is a Czech illustrator and comics artist. Born in 1992, she resides in Prague and has successfully finished her degree at Ladislav Sutnar Faculty of Design and Art. She has published her short comics stories in various Czech (Aargh!, Caves, Bubblegun, Xerox) and foreign (Bobla, Dirty Diamonds, CBA) magazines and won various prizes and scholarship.

She will introduce her work in a field of comics and its gender issues in the Czech Republic during her talk given in the prestigious BOZAR building as a part of Comic Strip Festival this year. She is surely one to know all about that given that she is a co-founder of the Czech branch of Laydeez do comics, an international organization that promotes female comics artists and their work.
