European Angst – “A conference on populism, extremism and euroscepticism in contemporary European societies”

Czech Centre Brussels together with Goethe Institut, EUNIC, the Alliance française de Bruxelles-Europe, the Italian Cultural Institute, the Polish Institute in Brussels and BOZAR invites you to a conference „European Angst - A conference on populism, extremism and euroscepticism in contemporary European societies“, which will be held in cooperation with European Movement International, Evens Foundation, and the Ambassade de France en Belgique. This conference will take place on 6th and 7th December 2016 at BOZAR, Brussels. Entry free, registration needed (see below) before 24th November.

Resentment, anger and anxiety are haunting Europe, seeding populism, extremism and Euroscepticism. The more momentum populist parties and movements gain, the more clueless the established political, cultural and legislative institutions seem to be. Why is this happening now? And how are we dealing with this?

Populism, xenophobia and nationalism pose serious challenges to European democracies and the European project. Be it the rise of AfD in Germany, Jobbik in Hungary, UKIP in Great Britain or Front National in France, these political groups do not only question the European Union as we know it, they also threaten to undermine the foundations on which liberal societies are built. The more momentum they gain, the more clueless the established political, cultural and legislative institutions seem to be. And once their rhetoric and their demands seep into mainstream discourse, the outcome is unpredictable, as the referendum on Great Britain’s remaining in the EU has shown.

The conference European Angst will shed light on these topics in a unique way. It will leave the comfort zone of liberal consensus by inviting controversial thinkers, creating thus a space for reflection and in-depth analysis.  Speakers are e.g. the Nobel prize for literature winner Herta Müller, French philosopher Didier Eribon, Slovenian philosopher and theoretician Slavoj Žižek or Turkish writer Elif Shafak. We are pleased to announce that there will be two Czech speakers: political scientist Vladimíra Dvořáková and journalist and political scientist Michal Ehl.
