CINEMATEK: One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest

One day, I got a package from California. There was a book inside I’d never heard of written by an author I’d never heard of but when I started to read I saw right away that this was the best material I’d come across in America,” reminisced the film director Miloš Forman.

The lead - Randle McMurphy, portrayed by the ingenious Jack Nicholson - is an outsider and a convicted criminal who has problems adapting to the status quo. After McMurphy is sentenced to prison for the statutory rape of a 15-year-old girl who claimed to be 18, he is able to escape penal labor by convincing the court that he belongs in a mental institution. Once there, McMurphy fights against the endless power of the evil Nurse Ratched to defend the other patients - the Native American Chief Bromden, the neurotic Billy Bibbit, the fantasizing Martin and the childish Charlie Cheswick and teaches them how to long for freedom and life behind the walls of the bureaucratic madhouse.

The film won awards in all major categories of the Academy awards in 1975.

CINEMATEK screens One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest in memoriam of the filmmaker Miloš Forman (1932 – 2018) to commemorate the genius of Czech and world-class film industry. After making his debut in the group known as “Czechoslovak New Wave” in the 60s, Forman worked with undeniably first-class filmmakers such as Miroslav Ondříček or Ivan Passer. Loves of a Blonde, Black Peter and The Firemen's Ball are regularly screened in cinemas until now and are a part of the best of Czechoslovak cinematography.

After moving to the US and One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest being crowned at Oscars in 1975, also a number of other awards followed – Golden Globes, BAFTA, César… in 1985, his Amadeus was awarded the best film and Forman the best director at Academy Awards. Valmont, The People vs. Larry Flynt, Man on the Moon and Goya’s Ghost are among other films by Forman who passed away last year.
