Student revolt of the 1960s with Karel Kovanda

The year 1968 shacked more societies across whole Europe, including the postcommunist states. The theme of the Prague student movement in the second half of the 20th century is dramatic and interesting, given that students played a key role in the modern history of the Czech lands. Czech students, filled with hopes related to the Prague Spring, demanded greater civic and academic liberties. Unlike in Western Europe, the hopes of Czechoslovak students were crushed by the invasion of Soviet-led troops in August 1968.

Discover the 1968 in former Czechoslovakia through a film by the famous Czech documentarist Olga Sommerová. She studied documentary film at FAMU and she has made around one hundred films, which brought her 35 awards at Czech and foreign film festivals. The screening will be a followed by a discussion with Karel Kovanda who was a student leader in 1960s, later a Czech Ambassador at NATO and at the UN.

The film will be screened with English subtitles; the discussion will be in English and moderated by Irena Koutská.
