„I, Olga Hepnarová“ at Film Fest Gent

The Czech centre in Brussels in cooperation with the Czech Film Center invites you to the 43rd edition of Film Fest Gent. Among others, a Czech documentary “I, Olga Hepnarová” by Tomáš Weinreb and Petr Kazda will be screened. The film is based on a true story of a last woman ever to be executed in Czechoslovakia. The film has already won several awards and it was also nominated for the Best European film 2016 of the Council of the European Film Academy. The screenings will take place in Ghent on 15th, 19th and 20th 2016 and introduction of the film by director Tomáš Weinreb and producer Vojtěch Frič will be held on 19th and 20th October.

Film Festival Gent is one of the most famous film events and it was founded in 1974. Originally a student festival has since developed into one of Europe's most prominent film events which should not be missed by any film fan. Every year in October, it introduces in different categories more than 100 feature films and 50 short films from all across the world to more than 100,000 spectators. The program of the 43rd edition of Film Fest Gent is inspired by cinema from two different corners of the earth: starting with the most Northern point of Europe for its Focus on Nordic Cinema and ending in the Far East for the Spotlight on Japan.

I, Olga Hepnarová

The film “I, Olga Hepnarová” is inspired by a real event which took place in July 1973 in Prague. Olga is a lonely young woman with a desperate wish to break free from society. She drifts statically through life, from woman to woman, without feeling any emotional connection to the women or the life she is leading. Eventually she finds a job as a truck driver and this gives her a brief sense of belonging. But something still nags her and she kills 8 people with her truck. Twenty years old Olga, before she got into the truck, wrote and sent a letter in which she passed a death sentence upon her society. Eventually, she became the last executed woman in Czechoslovakia.
