Literary evening with EUPL winning authors – Bianca Bellová

Bianca Bellová is one of the winning authors of the European Union Prize for Literature in 2017. The commission of the European Union Prize for Literature awarded on the recommendation of the Czech national jury the novel Jezero (The Lake), which also happened to be the Book of the year of Magnesia Litera Awards earlier this April. On 24th April 2017, the Czech Centre in Brussels would like to invite all the fans of Czech literature to the literary evening with Bianca Bellová in the Flemish house deBuren located in the centre of Brussels.

The literary evening will also host authors from Netherlands, Bulgaria, Switzerland, Montenegro and Latvia, where they will read excerpts from the awarded books and will meet with the in a friendly casual atmosphere. The evening is organized under the auspices of the network of European institutes for culture EUNIC Brussels and will be moderated by Gudrun De Geyter.

The European Union Prizes for Literature were in the past already given to Czech authors Jan Němec (Dějiny světla, 2014) and Tomáš Zmeškal (Milostný dopis klínovým písmem, 2011). The synopsis of the novel Jezero anticipates the story of a fishing village at the end of the world and a lake that is drying up and, ominously, pushing out its banks. “The men have vodka, the women have troubles, the children have eczema to scratch at. And what about Nami? Nami doesn’t have anything but a granny with fat arms. However, he does have a life ahead of him – a first love that is taken from him by Russian soldiers, and then all the rest of it. (…) This story is as old as humanity itself. For its hero – a boy who embarks on his journey with nothing but a bundle of nerves and a coat that was once his grandad’s – it is a pilgrimage. To get to the greatest mystery, he must sail across and walk around the lake and finally sink to its bottom.”

Bianca Bellová has already published Sentimentální román (Sentimental Novel, 2009),  Mrtvý muž (Dead Man, 2011) and Celý den se nic nestane (Nothing Happens All Day, 2013) in the very same publishing house. According to the Pluh agency, which represents Bianca Bellová, The Lake will be soon published in Macedonia, Italy, Bulgaria or Serbia.
